How to set the right goals for success!!

“Change is inevitable, but personal growth is a choice.”

Most of us know about goals and understand the idea of setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals that can provide direction, focus, and motivation to achieve desired outcomes.

Why then, do people regularly not meet their goals? Mainly because they are not the right ones. They are not what they really want in life or work. They set the goals based on what they think others want.

Through my coaching I can offer valuable guidance on how to discover your real goals and set out on the journey to achieve them for personal and work success. Just drop me an email or book a call to discuss.

Personal Goal Setting

Setting a "C-type" goal, which is a stretch goal, can help you find what it is you really want in life. On the journey you will discover hidden strengths, increase self-awareness, and make better choices with less stress and more enjoyment. The overriding gain is Self-Belief and Confidence. To achieve success, set personal and professional goals that excite and energize you.

Examples of personal goals might include achieving a specific personal dream, learning a new skill or improving health and fitness.

Work Goal Setting

Making a step change in work also needs a stretch goal. Having a clear motivating direction allows you skip more rungs in the ladder, as few of your colleagues will have this in mind.

The first step is to identify what matters to the CEO in the company and then how you can help them, your manager and the company succeed. Many people overlook this step and without clarity of criteria for success, how can they win?

The benefit of setting work-related goals is a greater sense of purpose and direction in your career and this improves performance and productivity. You are much more likely to be at the table where the important conversations are happening.

Examples of work-related goals might include improving sales performance, increasing your team’s productivity, or earning a promotion.

For all goals, it is important to first identify areas where you are not happy with the results you are getting, change those into what success could look like in those areas and develop a plan to achieve it. BUT, without the motivation and desire, coupled with specific action steps, a timeline for completion, and a system for tracking progress they will never happen.

Overcoming Obstacles

Some common obstacles to goal achievement might include lack of motivation, procrastination, fear or unforeseen challenges or setbacks. To overcome such obstacles, it is important to stay focused on the desired outcome, remain flexible and adaptable, and seek out support and guidance as needed.
